WhatsApp to Share your Personal Data With Facebook

 

Recently the Facebook-owned messaging app dropped its $1 annual subscription fee to make WhatsApp Free for Lifetime.

Now, WhatsApp has plans to introduce a new feature that would allow its users to integrate their Facebook accounts with the most widely used messaging app.

So far, the social media giant has been focusing on its own messaging platform, Messenger and both WhatsApp and Facebook have been working separately in terms of adding new features.

WhatsApp to Share User Data With Facebook

Android developer Javier Santos spotted a new feature in the latest beta build of WhatsApp, which indicates that soon you’ll start seeing some features interconnected between WhatsApp and Facebook.

 

The feature (optional, for now), dubbed "Share my account info," when selected will share your personal WhatsApp account information with Facebook in order "to improve your Facebook experience," according to the description.

Although it's unclear how exactly the new feature works, it is believed that the feature may help you share photos to your timeline and create an album shortcut via WhatsApp or vice versa.

Facebook-WhatsApp Deeper Integration

From past two years, we haven't noticed any Facebook and WhatsApp integration, but this minor change made by WhatsApp raised doubt in our minds that Why the social media giant is merging WhatsApp with Facebook.

When Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for over $20 Billion, CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook and Whatsapp would continue to co-exist as separate platforms.

At that time, WhatsApp team also assured its users that nothing would change and that the popular messaging app would operate independently.

However, this recent update considered being the first step towards merging the two popular platforms in an effort to take control of the popular messaging market and sustain growth together.

WhatsApp to Offer End-to-End Encryption

Moreover, The beta build of WhatsApp also includes a new section completely focused on users' privacy, indicating that the popular messaging service is looking to bolster security in order to make its user conversations more secure.

The new feature, dubbed "Show Security Indicators," will be imbibed in WhatsApp in an impending update. The feature is similar to the one Apple uses in its iMessage.

When enabled, the feature will encrypt all your chats and calls with End-to-End encryption, meaning users' conversations cannot be spied on; not even by WhatsApp itself.

This could be just a start, and we could see a deeper Facebook-WhatsApp integration in future that could even allow users to send messages between WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

German technology blog Macerkopf.de has posted what it claims are screenshots from an unreleased version of the popular messaging client WhatsApp for iOS.

The screenshots are from an unreleased version of the software (version 2.12.16.2), which is currently being tested internally, but at present it is not clear whether or not those screenshots are legitimate.

But, if the leaked screenshots are real, and WhatsApp adds the Free Video Calling feature, then the company could take an enormous bite out of some of its top rival.

WhatsApp Video Calling feature will allow you to make video calls to your friends and family anywhere in the world for free as long as you have a Wi-Fi network or an effective data plan on your registered number.

How to Crash Your Friends' WhatsApp Just By Sending Crazy Smileys

What would require crashing the wildly popular WhatsApp messaging application?

Nearly 4000 Smileys.

Yes, you can crash your friends' WhatsApp, both WhatsApp Web and mobile application, by sending them not any specially crafted messages, but just Smileys.

Indrajeet Bhuyan, an independent researcher, has reported  a new bug in WhatsApp that could allow anyone to remotely crash most popular messaging app just by sending nearly 4000 emojis to the target user, thereby affecting up to 1 Billion users.

Bhuyan is the same researcher who reported a very popular WhatsApp crash bug last year that required 2000 words (2kb in size) message in the special character set to remotely crash Whatsapp messenger app.

After this discovery, the company patched the bug by setting up the limits of characters in WhatsApp text messages, but unfortunately, it failed to set up limits for smileys send via WhatsApp.

"In WhatsApp Web, Whatsapp allows 65500-6600 characters, but after typing about 4200-4400 smiley browser starts to slow down," Bhuyan wrote in his blog post. "But since the limit is not yet reached so WhatsApp allows to go on inserting...when it receives it overflows the buffer and it crashes."

The recent bug tested on Android devices by multiple brands and successfully crashed:

• WhatsApp for Android devices including Marshmallow, Lollipop and Kitkat
• WhatsApp Web for Chrome, Opera and Firefox web browsers. 

It is sure that the latest version of WhatsApp is affected by this bug.

How to Protect Yourself 

Bhuyan told  that he had reported the WhatsApp crash bug to Facebook. However, before the company patches the issue, there is a simple way out.

If you become a victim of such message on WhatsApp, just open your messenger and delete the whole conversation with the sender.

However, remember, if you have kept some records of your chat with that particular friend, you’ll end up losing them all.

At the beginning of this year, Bhuyan also reported two separate bugs — WhatsApp Photo Privacy bug and WhatsApp Web Photo Sync Bug — in the WhatsApp web client that in some way exposes its users’ privacy.

WhatsApp Blocks Links to Telegram Messenger (Its biggest Competitor)

It seems like Facebook-owned popular messaging service WhatsApp is blocking links to rival messaging applications – at least Telegram app for now.

Telegram users are noticing that WhatsApp is blocking any links to the privacy-oriented messaging service Telegram.me.

Although users are free to send or receive Telegram links on WhatsApp, the links appear as non-clickable that you cannot copy or forward.

This strange behavior was first noticed this morning by Telegram users over on Reddit.

The URLs – which are generally automatically made clickable – still appeared as plain text messages, but they didn't register as hyperlinks, blocking users from copying or forwarding them to other users or other apps.

In general, this odd behavior is done with malicious URLs such as malware or spam.

The Culprit

However, this strange behavior was not exhibited on every device. Only WhatsApp for Android is currently showing this behavior while Telegram URLs still work fine on the iOS version of WhatsApp.

This issue only began appearing in WhatsApp Version 2.12.327, a silent update pushed earlier this morning.

Telegram has confirmed the situation to The Verge that the Facebook, who owned WhatsApp, is indeed responsible for the issue, as the social network has used this link-blocking trick in the newsfeed and Messenger app before to prevent its users from visiting Torrent websites.

"Typically after a media backlash, FB steps back and blames their intelligent filtering for the problem," said a Telegram spokesperson. "We expect the same to happen this time as well."

However, Facebook and WhatsApp are yet to comment on the issue. The popular messaging app has not even acknowledged that a new update was pushed this morning.
